The Surrey town of Shepperton lies just 15 miles south west of Charing Cross and was once part of the county of Middlesex. In the days when the Domesday Book was written Shepperton was known as an agricultural village, although that has now changed considerably. Even in the middle of the 19th century the town was surrounded by fields and held its own races, organised by the 10th Hussars, on Tuesday 10th April 1860 on a 1 ½ mile course on the edge of the town in the direction of Chertsey. The course contained 2 good brooks and ‘all kinds of fences’, and had to be traversed twice in a 3 mile race. The opening event was a match in which Captain Bowyer’s Piccadilly defeated Captain Baumgarten’s Welshman. The feature race, the Challenge Cup sponsored by Colonel Baker, was won by Hop The Twig, while the meeting concluded with the 10th Hussars Cup over 3 miles which went to Mr Thacker’s Fabiola.
